iPad Sleeve

Merry Christmas!!! This is not a Christmas post at all, as I have sewn an iPad case and it is not even with Christmas fabric. But I did do a Christmas video for YouTube, where I made coasters with Christmas shapes on them, so if you want to check that out then here it is:
On second thought, this post actually is related to Christmas, because this is what I sewed for my cousin as a Christmas present. It was last minute too, I sewed this on Christmas Eve and finished it in one day. With school going on and winter break starting on December 23, I did not have time to sew.

But now that I did, I am very excited to share this tutorial with you because it is part of my "sewing for devices" tag. Most of the time when I sew for gadgets and devices, they become really useful. My cousin has been carrying his iPad in a plastic bag (not the grocery kinds) for two years to school, and now he won't have to do that because he got a perfectly handy iPad sleeve!

This iPad sleeve is a normal sleeve, and has a flap closure that closes with snap buttons. What makes it special is that at the back, there is a zipper section where you can put in your earphones and your charger.

So yeah! I have nothing more to say, so let's get on with the tutorial. I’ve included a lot of photos for the tutorial, but they lose a bit of quality on the way. The sun set and there was no more natural night. But bear with me and we’ll get to the finish!

What you need:
From the outer fabric:
* (1) 9x12"piece for front
* (1) 8 x 12" piece for flap closure
* (1) 4 x 12" piece for zipper panel
* (1) 6 x 12" piece for zipper panel
From solid fabric:
* (1) 9x 12" piece for zipper section lining
* (2) 2" long pieces for zipper tabs (they should be the width of your zipper)
From flannel:
* (2) 9 x 12" pieces or sleeve lining
* (1) 8 x 12"piece for flap lining
* (1) 4 x 12" piece for zipper panel lining
* (1) 6 x 12" piece for zipper panel lining
Press fusible interfacing of corresponding size to each of these pieces:
*(2) 9 x 12" pieces of outer fabric
* (1) 8 x 12" piece of outer fabric for flap
* (1) 4 x 12" piece of flannel
* (1) 6 x 12" piece of flannel
* (1) 9 x 12" lining piece of flannel

Instructions:
1. Fold over 1/4" along the short edge of the zipper tabs. Press.

2. Place the folded edge of the zipper tab close to the zipper end and sew using 1/8" seam allowance. Repeat for other end of zipper.

3. With the start of the zipper on the left, place it right sides together with the 4 x 12" outer zipper panel piece. Sew, then fold back and press.

4. Now place the zipper right sides together with the 6 x 12" outer zipper panel piece.

5. Sew, then fold back and press again. Topstitch along the edges of the zipper.

6. Trim the top and bottom edges so that the whole thing measures 9 x 12". Trim the top more than the bottom as we don't want the zipper to be smack dab in the middle.

7. Place the wrong side of the piece you just sewed on the right side of the solid zipper section lining. Baste along the two short edges.

8. Place the piece you just sewed right sides together with the outer 9 x 12" outer piece. Sew along the three sides, leaving the top long edge open. Use a 1/2" seam allowance.

9. Turn right side out and press.

10. To make the lining, place the two 9 x 12" flannel pieces right sides together and sew, using a 1/2" seam allowance, along the two short sides and the bottom. Clip corners and trim.

11. To make the flap closure, draw two 2" squares on the bottom corners of the outer 8 x 12" piece. Cut diagonally to cut the squares in half. Use the triangles to cut off the corners of the 8 x 12" flannel piece.

12. Fold the pieces in half to ensure that they are symmetrical. Place the flannel and outer flap pieces right sides together.

13. Sew along three sides leaving top open and using 1/2" seam allowance.

14. Turn right side out and topstitch along the edges of the flap.

15. Place the flap right sides together with the back of the sleeve. Baste along the top edge.

16. To finish, slip the whole thing inside the flannel lining, which should not be turned right side out. The flap should be tucked inside.

17. Sew around the top edge, leaving a 3" opening in the front.

18. Turn right side out through that opening.

19. Slip-stitch the opening closed, then tuck the lining inside the sleeve.

20. Sew on the snap closures, making sure that they are adequately positioned.

Sew on a button for embellishment if you'd like and we're done.
YAY! We’ve made an iPad sleeve.
