3-D Animal Cell
I finally am posting this sewn 3-D animal cell. I actuallly did this like in the beginning of the school year for my science project, in about September. I'm really proud of this and I wanted to show the methods to make this!
1. Cut out two 5 1/2" radius, 8" diameter half circles from white fabric. Fuse on equally-sized interfacings to the backs of the half circles. Lay the half circles right sides together and sew along straight edge using 1/4" seam. Fold back.
Cut out a 3" diameter circle from felt. Topstitch this onto the middle of the larger white circle. Then take a 1" button as the nucleus and sew it on to the bottom half side of the felt circle.
2. Cut out two 30" long pieces of yarn. Sew each piece to the top and bottom of the felt circle, weaving back and forth.
3. Cut out 6 bean-like pieces of fabric for the mitochondria. Lay one "bean" piece right sides together with another piece, sew around, turn right side out, and topstitch onto the cell. You will have 3 mitochondria in total. Cut out 3 mitochondria interior pieces from felt, into a squiggly shape. Topstitch these onto each mitochondri that is on the cell. Sewn on 6 buttons onto the cell for vacuoles.
4. Cut out 2 squiggly shapes from felt for the golgi body and topstitch these onto the cell which so far is a flat white circle (cytoplasm).
5. Cut out two fabric circle pieces measuring 2 1/2" in diameter. Lay the circles right sides together, sew around, and turn right side out. This is the lysosome; topstitch it onto the cytoplasm.
6. Cut out 4 long almond shaped pieces of fabric, measuring 12" in length and 4 1/2" in width.
7. Align the horizontal edge of one of these "almond" pieces to the top edge of the cytoplasm circle. Sewn with 1/8" seam. (The almond shape and cytoplasm should be right sides together.)
Repeat for another almond piece and the bottom edge of the cytoplasm.
8. Now, turn the whole thing right side out and stuff.
9. Sew the third almond piece to the edge of the first using 1/4" seam. Repeat for the 4th almond piece by sewing that to the edge of the second almond piece. Bring the two flaps up.
10. Finally, sew the middle closed, tucking raw edges in. Then poke in some pins into the cell for the ribosomes. All done!
