Band-Aid Zipper Pouch

This zipper pouch is quite small but big enough to hold band-aids, which is the point. The little tab at the side allows a key ring to be attached. I'm very proud of this pouch especially because I created the tutorial by being inspired and combining techniques from two different blogs.

Here's how I sewed the pouch:

Materials

*Four 1 x 1" pieces of white fabric

*Two 1 x 1" pieces of red fabric

*One 1 x 2" piece of red fabric

*Two 5 x 3" outer fabrics (striped)

*Two 5 x 3" lining fabrics (blue)

*Two 5 x 3" pieces of fusible interfacing

*One 2 x 1 1/4" piece of striped fabric for tab

* Nylon zipper that is more than 4 inches long

Steps

1. Fuse the interfacings to the back of the outer striped fabric pieces. (Iron them on)

2. FOR THE CROSS, sew two white squares onto either sides of each red square, 1/8" seam allowance. Press as you go.

3. Sewn on the two strips to either sides of the red rectangle. Press as you go. Trim any excess white fabric sticking out from the top or bottom of the square.

4. Set aside the red cross and start to assemble: Lay one outer striped piece right side up. Place the zipper face down on it, aligning the top edges. The zipper pull should be to the left. Lay the blue lining piece right side down on top of this fabric sandwich. Pin and sew along the top, 1/4" seam allowance.

5. Flip the lining and outer piece back on either sides of the zipper and press. This is the front part of the pouch.

6. Fold the four edges in a little bit for the red cross square piece. Press. Topstitch the red cross piece onto the front part of the pouch, centering it and keeping in mind that some space will be taken away from the bottom of the front piece eventually. Also make sure that you don't catch the lining when topstitching the cross on.

7. Continuing the assembling of the pouch: Lay the back remaining outer striped piece right side up on worksurface. Place the completed half of pouch right side down with the zipper aligning at the top edge. Finally place the lining piece right side down. Pin and sew along the top using 1/4" seam allowance.

8. Fold the frontal piece and back piece of the pouch back on either sides of the zipper. Press. Then topstich near the zipper only at the back of the pouch. I also did a little more topstitching design on the red cross at this point.

9. FOR THE TAB, fold the piece half lengthwise, right sides together. Sew the side using 1/8" seam allowance. Turn right side out and press.

10. Trim any fabric sticking out on the so-far completed pouch before proceeding. Now for the biggest part: Arrange the pouch so that the two outer pieces and the two lining pieces are right sides together on either sides of the zipper. The zipper should be half open, its teeth facing the lining. Pin and sew around the whole perimeter of the thing using 1/4" seam allowance. Round the corners by tracing a round object and sewing along that line. Leave a 2" opening at the bottom of the lining.

11. Trim and clip corners before turning pouch right side out through the opening in the lining.

12. Slipstitch the opening closed and tuck the lining into the pouch. Give the whole thing a nice pres. DONE!
