Ruffled Zipper Pouch

Ruffled Zipper Pouch

Materials

-5.5" x 9" piece from outer fabric

-5.5" x 13" piece from outer fabric (gathered front)

-4" x 9" piece, I used polka dot fabric (band at front)

-(2) 5.5" x 9" pieces from lining fabric

-(2) 1.5" x 2.5" pieces from outer fabric (zipper tabs)

-(2) 5.5" x 9" pieces from fusible interfacing

-Nylon zipper that is 7"

Steps

1. To make the band, fold the piece in half lengthwise and sew the open side using 1/2" seam allowance. Turn right side out and press with the seam in the middle.

2. To make the gathers of the pouch, sew two running lines that are 1" apart from each other at the middle of the piece. Pull the two threads and arrange the creases until the piece is 9" long. Press.

3. Take the band piece and place it in the middle of the gathered piece, hiding the running stitches. Pin and topstitch on the top and bottom sides of the band. Then fuse one of the interfacings to the back of this whole piece.

4. To make the zipper tabs, fold one piece in half width wise, press, and unfold. Fold the two raw edges of the piece to the center crease and press. Do the same to the other zipper tab piece.

5. Around each end of your zipper, fold the zipper tabs in half, following the center crease and hiding the raw edges. Topstitch each zipper tab onto the zipper by making neat stitches along the side of the zipper tab piece that is close to the zipper. Use a very small seam allowance. Trim the edges of the zipper tabs to fit the width of the zipper.

6. To assemble, place the gathered outer piece right side up on your worksurface. Place the zipper right side down with the zipper pull to the left. Place the lining on top, wrong side up. Align top edges, pin, and sew using 1/4" seam allowance.

7. Flip pieces back so that they are wrong sides together and press.

8. Fuse the other interfacing piece to the back of the other exterior piece. Place this piece on your worksurface right side up. Place the gathered clutch piece with the zipper right side down, zipper pull to the right. Place the remaining lining piece wrong side up. Align top edges, pin, and sew using 1/4" seam allowance.

9. Flip the pieces back so that the wrong sides of the outer piece and lining piece face each other on each side of the zipper. Press. Topstitch on each side of the zipper, close to the edge.

10. Moving on to the final steps, open your zipper halfway. Place the outer pieces right sides together and the lining pieces right sides together on either side of the zipper. The zipper teeth should face the lining and be properly sandwiched in between the pieces. Leaving a 3" opening at the top of the lining, sew around the perimeter of this whole thing using 1/4" seam allowance.

11. Clip, trim the edges, and turn right side out through the opening in the lining. Poke out all the corners and edges neatly and slipstitch the opening in the lining closed. Tuck the lining into the pouch and press the whole thing well.

12. This is an optional step, but if you want to box the corners of the pouch, simply take a corner, center the seam to the middle, and sew a line across that is 1/2" below from the tip of the corner. Tuck the boxed corners back into the pouch.

All done!
