Patchwork Triangular Pencil Case

This is my first project using a sewing machine.

Materials

*14" long zipper

*One button for embellishment

* Six 3 x 2 1/4" pieces assorted fabric for patchwork

*One 8 x 4 1/2" piece for bottom

*Two triangles that are 2 3/4" on each side

*One 8 x 8" piece for lining

*Two triangles that are 2 3/4" on each side for lining

*One 8 x 12" piece cotton batting

Instructions

1. 1/4" seam allowance is used throughout project. Sew three patchwork pieces together.

2. Sew the strip to the bottom piece. Repeat for the other three patchwork pieces. With right sides facing in, center the outer triangle pieces on the sides of the bottom piece. Sew and fold back. Press everything neatly.

3. Place the whole piece atop of cotton batting. Quilt then trim the batting the same shape as the fabric piece.

4. With right sides facing together, let the side of the triangle on the right side of the whole piece align with the side of the top right corner of the whole piece. Sew. Repeat for all the sides of the triangles.

5. Trim the zipper to the right length to match the length of the pencil case. Then sew on the trimmed end, going back and forth to create a stopper for the zipper.

6. Open up the zipper. Sew each strip to each side of the mouth of the pencil case, right sides together. I half hand-sewed and half-machine-sewed for this one. Turn pencil case right side out and sew the button on now.

7. Piece together the lining using the same method as step 4. But leave it wrong side out, unlike me.

8. As the final step, fold down the top of the lining piece about 1/2". Then slipstitch by hand the top edges of the lining piece a little below the zipper strips of the interior of the pencil case. Topstitch near the top edges of the exterior of the pencil case. Done!
