Box Pouch with Fold-Over Flap
I was cleaning my desk yesterday and there were some little accessories like a cable, a large marble, a USB, a hair tie, or whatever that couldn't really be put into a pencil holder or a sewing box. They were just "things" that needed one handy holder to be piled into. That's why I made a box pouch, which is quite wide in the inside for these essentials. My desk is much less messier now and I feel good having a clean desk while typing away in here. You see I haven't cleaned my desk in ages...so. ;)
Materials:
1. Iron fabrics before cutting, I didn't for the canvas. Cut out the outer pieces and the lining following the measurements below. I rounded the corners of them with a 1 1/2" diameter spool.
2. Cut out cotton batting 1/4" smaller on the edges than the lining, then cut out another piece of cotton batting identical to that one.
3. You will also need a button, coloured thread for embroidery, and snap closures.
1/4" seam allowance is used throughout the process.
Instructions:
1. Sew outer pieces together in the order shown in the measurement picture above: Lay pieces right sides together on the edges, sew, open up, and press with open seams. Topstitch near the sewn places, on the canvas and on the thin fabric, where the four pink lines are in the photo below.
At this point, turn the piece around and carefully write with pen your choice of word on the top right side of the canvas. Make sure you leave adequate space on the right because that's a side that will be sewn, minusing the amount of space. On top of your writing embroider with thread, I used dark brown. I also filled in the loops (they're supposed to be leaves) with green thread.
2. Fold the lower part in half right sides together, leaving the flap to be. Sew on the areas marked pink below, aligning the rectangular sides carefully.
3. There should be openings on each corner. Form them into triangles (triangles without pointed tops), with the seam in the middle. Sew across the flat tops of the "triangles" as marked by the pink line in the picture below showing one corner.
4. When you are finished, the entire thing should look like this:
5. Construct the lining the same way you did for the outer piece, except, leave a hole on one side. The size of the hole is roughly shown below, circled in pink.
6. Turn the lining right side out, then insert it into the outer piece that is still wrong side out. Trim raw edges for neat alignment. Sew on all the areas marked in pink in the photo below. Make sure you sew around the edges of the box pouch, and I am not meaning for the flap. Here I hand-sewed everything.
7. Because I didn't use fusible interfacing, I also sewed closed the sides where the batting was gapping open.
8. As the last steps, turn the entire thing right side out through the opening in the lining and slipstitch opening closed. Tuck lining into pouch. Topstitch on the edges of the flap (pink lines). Then, because I found that the box pouch was too wide for the flap, I pinched the center seams on the sides inwards and slip-stitched a little on the top edges, creating little triangles (shown by pink arrow).
Iron everything thoroughly, also creating creases where needed on the box shape.
Sew on snap closures and add a button on the flap.
Done!
