Sunglasses Case
I've made this sunglass case two times, and it's really useful. One I made for my grandma last year, which she still uses, and this one I made for myself because the sunglass case for my sunglasses were so big they took up all the space in my bag. Because this case is made with thick fusible cotton batting, it protects the sunglasses very well.
Materials you will need:
(2) 4 x 7 1/2" fabric for outer pieces
(2) 4 x 7 1/2" fabric for lining pieces
(2) 8" x 7 1/2" fusible cotton batting, fold these in half so that they are 4" wide, 7 1/2" tall
(2) 3 1/4" x 3 1/2" canvas for flap pieces
(1) 3" x 3" fusible cotton batting square for interfacing the flap
Snap closures
A button for embellishment
Let's get started!
1/4" seam allowance is used throughout the project.
1. Fuse the exterior fabrics to the interfacing pieces. (Lay the exterior piece on one half of the interfacing, press, then fold the other half of the interfacing back.)
2. I wanted to make the exterior less plain but still simple, so I topstitched along a few of the stripes on my fabric. Doing this also ensured the folded interfacing stayed secured in place.
3. To make the canvas flap, place the two canvas pieces together and round the curves with a pencil. I eyeballed this. Then cut along the lines you made.
Cut the cotton interfacing to be 1/4" smaller on its perimeter than the canvas pieces. Fuse. Sew the canvas pieces together on the curved bottom and sides, then turn right side out through the opening at the top.
4. Topstitch the canvas flap on its curved bottom and sides.
5. To assemble, lay one exterior piece and the lining piece right sides together (my lining fabric was solid so it really didn't matter) and sew across the top edge.
For the other exterior piece, place it right side up, place the canvas flap right side down with top edges aligning, and lay the remaining lining piece right side down. Sew across the top edge catching the raw edges of all three fabrics.
Open the two assembled pieces so that the right sides of the outer and lining pieces are visible. Press. The canvas flap should still be right side down.
6. Place the two assembled pieces right sides together. The right sides of the exterior pieces should be touching, and the right sides of the lining pieces should be touching. The centre seams should be nicely aligned.
Pin and sew all around the perimeter, leaving a 2 3/4" opening at the side of the lining. Trim corners and bulky edges of the interfacing.
7. Through the opening in the lining, turn the pouch right side out. Poke out all corners with a dull pencil.
Slip-stitch the lining opening closed, and tuck the lining into the pouch. Press everything neatly, including the fold-over crease for the canvas flap.
8. Sew snap closures onto the underside of the flap and close to the top edge of the front. Make sure not to sew through the fabrics. It's better to position the closure on the flap close to the edge so that the edge of the flap doesn't stay lifted once closed.
9. Sew a button to the front of the canvas flap as embellishment.
All done, and ready to go!
